Retail Job Application Form

A retail job application form lives or dies on the availability question. Experience matters, but a great candidate who can't do Saturdays is not a candidate for a Saturday shift.

For online shops, retailers and independent brands.

Availability first, experience second

Retail rotas are jigsaw puzzles. The most experienced applicant is worthless to a shift you can't fill, and the least experienced one who can do Sunday mornings is gold. Yet most application forms ask about availability last, if at all.

So this template asks it early, day by day, alongside how many hours they want. Combined with a start date and right-to-work confirmation, you can shortlist from the spreadsheet before reading a single paragraph.

Screen before you spend time

Most of the work in an application process is on the ones that were never eligible. Asking the disqualifying questions first - dates, requirements, basic facts - means you spend your reading time on the real candidates.

Order numbers turn a complaint into a resolution

"My order is wrong" with no order number is a support conversation that takes four emails. Asking for the number, the item and what happened turns the same message into something one person can resolve on the first reply.

It's the same trick for wholesale enquiries and returns: ask the two facts that decide the answer, and stop the thread before it starts.

Long enough to decide, short enough to finish

Applications fail in two directions: too short to judge, or so long that good candidates give up. This template asks what a decision genuinely needs, split into steps so it never looks like a wall.

Edit it like a document, publish like a link

Add questions, remove questions, change the order and the wording, set your accent colour. When you save, the form is live at its own address - share it by link, QR code or a button on your site, and read the answers in your dashboard.

Questions

Can applicants attach a CV?

Not yet - and for retail roles the structured answers usually matter more. Ask for a link if you want one, and use the availability grid to shortlist.

Is it legal to ask about right to work?

Asking whether someone has the right to work in your country is standard and expected. Don't ask about nationality or immigration status - verify documents at interview, through your usual process.

Can applicants attach a CV or document?

Not yet - file uploads are on the roadmap. Most people ask for a link (to a portfolio, a CV in cloud storage, or a profile) which works today and keeps the form fast.

Can I close applications on a deadline?

Yes. Close the form and anyone with the link sees a short closed page instead of the questions, so nobody fills in an application that can't be considered.

Can more than one person review them?

Yes - invite your team into the same account and they'll see the same responses. You can also export to a spreadsheet and score them wherever you like.

Can this work alongside my store platform?

Yes - it's a normal link, so it goes on a product page, in a packing slip, in an order confirmation email or in your help centre. Responses stay in ava42, where you can export them.
